When moving files in Drive, preserve the "Updated..." info

Can the Move action in Drive be changed to preserve the original “Updated on” and “Updated by” information? Currently, “Updated on” is overwritten with a new timestamp and “Updated by” is set to the username of whoever did the move. Most of the time, we’re just sorting images into folders and so want to know who uploaded the file and when it was last actually modified. (Note that moving a file via the API does preserve the “Updated by” name but still updates the timestamp.)

Hi @Encouraging Amphibian,
Thank you for raising this.
Currently, when a file is moved within Drive, the system updates the “Updated on” timestamp and “Updated by” field based on the user performing the move action. This reflects the latest operation performed on the file.
We understand your expectation to preserve the original metadata (such as the initial uploader and last actual modification time), especially when files are simply being reorganized into folders.
We’ll review the technical feasibility of preserving the original “Updated on” and “Updated by” information during move operations and evaluate whether this can be handled differently for organizational actions like folder moves.
We’ll share an update once we have more clarity from our internal evaluation.
