Glossary callout not registered by screen readers

When a screen reader is going through a page and comes across a glossary item, it does not register that there is a callout definition, it will only read the word. We'd like for the callout/pop out to be able to recognized by screen readers for accessibility compliance.
Since we are held to the expectation of a certain level of accessibility by law due to the type of customers we use - this not being accessible prevents us from using this feature.
