Changing slugs when switching versions to main version

Right now we are not showing version names in the URL for the main version. Customer's concern is if we change the secondary version(with slug v2) to the main version then we will not show this slug. If they have bookmarked the pages with slug v2 then this will give broken links. Ticket # 130643

I recently changed my main version and deprecated another version and ran into many issues with broken links that I am now having to manually clean up. An easier way of mass updating links would be greatly appreciated.
