Articles Without Status Indicators Are Showing in "What's New" + Notification Issues

My team has our own SOP for using the "Update" status with our articles. We don't want "Update" to be visible with articles that have undergone small changes (e.g. re-uploading an image so it's higher quality) because users will then think there's been a change to how the software itself functions. So in these cases, we won't have a status change when publishing our edits.
Problem is, these articles will still show up in the "What's New" tab, despite lacking an assigned status (see picture). Also, users who've used the "follow category" feature will still receive emails for any changes to an article, even if we don't want an article to have an "update" status.
Can you either a) limit the "What's New" tab to only articles with statuses, or b) provide users with the option to turn the above on/off? I'm sure others may disagree with how we'd like this area to function, so a choice may be better.
As for "follow" notifications, an on/off setting to include or not include published, status-less articles in notifications would also be needed.
Alternatively, you could include a couple check marks in the "Publish confirmation" modal under " > Configure article settings" where users can choose:
– Exclude article from the "What's New" tab
– Do not notify subscribed users with an email
Thank you! :)
