To chime in, currently, you need a mixed site to have certain parts of the kb locked out and then require users to create an account.

For us that only have a public site, it would be great if we can publish a doc, have it visible, but only make it available to some users who has a password. It would even be create if it can allow is to add text that says " To access this help article/doc, please contact <contact details>"
