variables and snippets not displaying unless republish

For some of my articles (not all), snippets and variables do not display unless the article is re-published twice.
Before "launching" our site, I need to search "snippet" and "variable" on the public site to make sure I caught all the articles, then for each article I:
(1) pull up the article in the backend.
(2) Edit/fork.
(3) Pulish with no changes.
(4) Edit/fork again.
(5) Publish with no changes again. At that point, the snippets and variables seem to work.
I have noticed that once the re-publishing occurs, the problem seems to go away. I can't figure out why this happens from some articles but not for others.
any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

I received an alert from a customer service rep that one article was showing on her end as "{{snippet...." but when I loaded the article later on, it showed up fine. The inconsistency is leading to some confusion.

just noticed, my search for "snippets" was at 56 originally, now it's at 52. but after updating 5 or so articles, it appears the article content itself is showing up right. no end user is actually going to search "snippets" so this isn't a big deal, but from a QC perspective this is an inconvenient step.
for what it's worth, the "variables" search results updated upon reload, after each article i re-published using the steps above.
